As we all know, regular exercise will boost our fitness levels, change our body shape, help us lose weight and build muscle. But it also has a huge potential to enhance our mental well-being. Even a short 10 min workout, a quick run or a brisk walk can increase our mental alertness, energy and positive mood.
Participation in regular physical activity, whatever that may be, can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. It can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression. With that in mind, we always use the phrase, "make your 60 mins in the gym the best hour of your day" and by that we mean: work at whatever pace you are comfortable with, forget everything else that is going on in your life for this hour and enjoy the escape with your gym friends. Have a laugh or a chat, sweat and relax! Of course, we know this is easier said than done at times, but has anyone ever genuinely regretted a workout or going for a walk to clear the head? Even if it only makes you feel good for a short time, it's worth it. Our lives now are so, so consumed by adverts, online games, busy schedules, social media, YouTube, Tik Tok etc, etc and unfortunately for some, drugs and alcohol can also take it's toll. It's not hard to see how or why any of us would feel overwhelmed or start to feel down. There are so many added pressures that come hand in hand with these things too, such as self esteem, bullying, peer pressure, body image, addiction, debt and trying to keep up with Mrs Jones. It can all become too much. Now more than ever, we need to start proactively looking after our mental wellness and keep an eye on each other. There's lots of professional help available and we would certainly encourage anyone to seek it if necessary. Likewise, if all you need is to blow off some steam, release some stress and chat to a mate, the gym is the perfect medicine.

People who aren't involved in CrossFit often joke about it being one big cult. Of course, it's not a cult, but there is no doubt about it, the sense of community is a strong point of difference for CrossFit gyms compared to your average Joe "globo gyms". This sets us apart.
In some aspects, CrossFit can be compared to a team sport whereby you feel as though you are part of an environment where everybody is working towards a common goal – to continually improve strength, fitness and become a better version of themselves, as cheesy as that sounds. Our community will also push you harder than you could ever possibly imagine. When you think you've hit a dark place in a workout and you want to stop or give up, our members will encourage you and lift you up and make sure you get over the line! It might feel like torture at the time, but boy does it feel good afterwards! Everyone knows your name. Everyone wants you to smash the workout. Everyone will push you on. Everyone will congratulate you after the session and most importantly, everyone is in the same boat!! You might be wondering why this fits into our weekly Wellness Wednesday post, but it's very simple really. Without the community we build within the four walls of our gym, our members wouldn't experience the daily highs and lows, pain, torture, banter, buzz, adrenaline, friendships, challenges and triumphs that come with CrossFit. And all those things put together make us better and healthier people. When you join a CrossFit gym like ours, going to a class becomes a hobby rather than a chore! That's why we love CrossFit and love our community. This one is for parents of young kids!
The vestibular system is located in your inner ear and is activated with movements of the head. It's very important to help our children develop their vestibular systems from a young age as a well developed system is crucial for:
Activities such as running, rolling, climbing, jumping, swinging, swimming, riding a bike or spinning around are excellent ways to stimulate the vestibular system. Encouraging our kids to play, fall over, roll about etc are simple, yet very effective ways to help them develop. This is why our CrossFit kids classes incorporate all sorts of fun games which focus on their overall development. |
