Two thousand, six hundred.
That's the number. 2,600 early mornings 2,600 whiteboard briefs 2,600 warm ups 2,600 workouts 2,600 cool downs 2,600 times, our main woman and mother of CFA, Carmel McCann, has attended CrossFit Anam For context, CrossFit HQ emailed us very recently to let us know that a man in his 70s in America had completed his 1000th CrossFit session. Very impressive! Of course, this made us think of Carmel and we couldn't help but wonder how many sessions she'd completed. After a little bit of digging, we pulled together her numbers and there we have it. 2,600. Yer man in America has a bit of catching up to do! In 2013, when we first opened, Carmel had just turned 61 years of age. For an average of 5 classes per week, for 11 years on the trot, Carmel has now hit a record of 2600 classes, just this week When it's broken down, that is an unbelievable statistic, especially when you factor Covid closures into it She is now 72, and not only is she fitter than she's ever been, she's fitter than most people we know and showing absolutely no signs of slowing down! We've preached this before but, CrossFit = Longevity. There is no doubt about it. We hit another milestone this week too - for the first time ever, we had three generations taking part in the same CrossFit class. Carmel, Eilis and young Alice! It just so happens that 2,600 is also the exact number of grandchildren that Carmel has, so we've no doubt there will be plenty more of the 3rd generation joining her for workouts very soon Thank you for your loyalty, commitment, hard work and good examples, Carmel. CFA would not exist without you, literally!

Yesterday, we were delighted to present "the best looking" McCloskeys (according to Phelim ) with a cheque for £1,620 for the Air Ambulance
Once again, a huge thanks to everyone who came to take part and donate to our 'WOD For Adrian' fundraiser. We are blown away by the support from many people far and wide! We have a wonderful community. Thanks also to the McCloskey family for gifting us a fantastic limited edition 'Run For Adrian' framed shirt. It will take pride of place in CFA A lot of non CrossFitters have a false sense of the community we create within our boxes.
Some of the common misconceptions are that every member who joins CrossFit swears an oath to Dave Castro, buys a bag of chalk and dusts themselves down with it and then signs their life away in their own blood to the CrossFit cult, whilst of course, wearing a pair of brand new Reebok Nanos. OK the last bit is true. But In actual fact, we are just normal people, doing something we all enjoy together. In the English language, the word 'community' derives from the Latin "communitas" which means "public spirit". We talk quite a lot about our community here at CrossFit Anam, for the simple reason, it is the community spirit within the four walls of our gym that makes it so fulfilling. When we refer to one of our CrossFit classes as being 'the best hour of your day' we aren't solely referring to our programming (that's for another day) but we are referring to the friendly atmosphere created by our coaches and our members. The warm welcome you receive when you walk in. The encouragement and support to keep pushing on. The craic. The team bonding. The coffee afterwards and the all important friendships that have and will continue to be forged through fitness. That's our community! It's been a while since we did a 'member spotlight' so here we are, getting back into good habits and kicking things off with our relative 'newbie', Julie Wood!
Julie joined CrossFit Anam back in September 2021. She initially signed up for two or three sessions a week but she soon realised how much she loved it, so she ramped up her training to four or five sessions a week! When we asked Julie what made her want to start CrossFit and stick at it, this is what she had to say: "The reason I joined CrossFit Anam was to continue my weight loss journey by moving towards more fitness goals. I lost 6 stone in 15 months and was going to a standard gym as part of that goal. I love the gym but had always seen CrossFit online and thought it was for really dedicated athletes. But one day I decided to look for CrossFit near by and found this one. I had a coaching session with Cathy and thought, why not give this a go? I haven’t looked back since! My favourite thing is the variety of each session. I love lifting and cardio and being introduced to gymnastics has been brilliant!" Julie's fitness goals for 2022 are to master kip swings and pull ups and we will do our very best to help her achieve those goals! Keep er lit Julie, legend! This gym is a coaching gym. It isn’t secondary school and we are not like other gyms either.
We aren’t fans of drama, cliques or judgment but we are fans of treating people with respect. We are glad you spared an hour to exercise, we don’t punish you for being late. We believe that exercise should be enjoyed as a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment for what you ate. We believe that you have to find something you enjoy before you’ll ever be motivated to exercise or eat properly. We believe in progress, not perfection. And we believe in making sure you’re back in again tomorrow. If you want to get fit, have fun and forget about secondary school, this is the place for you. PS: We also believe Lisa has very short legs. Tonight we're focusing on Lukas Witkowski!
Originally from Poland, Lukas moved here with his family about 10 years ago and today marks his one year anniversary with us at CrossFit Antrim. Don't know what took him so long to join!! Lukas is one of our 3.30pm regulars... it would be very, very unlike him to miss a class! He is a gentleman! Arrives on time, quietly goes about his business, listens to the coaches, constantly wants to get better and just gets stuck in and gives 100% every class! He's a gentle giant but he absolutely destroys the assault bike He has made some big changes to himself over the last 12 months and we love seeing him continuously improve! Here's what he had to say! "I started CrossFit nearly a year ago and I must say it changed my life completely. I joined Crossfit Antrim because I needed to change some things in my life, I felt like my normal routine was a vicious circle! I was never a fan of the gym but CrossFit is something different. You are never bored at any point and that's what makes me stick at it. Another reason why I still go to Crossfit Antrim is because the atmosphere is great plus there's plenty of helpful hands around. Every time I see a bike or rowing on the white board I just can't wait to get to the gym but when I see snatching or over head squats.... not so much! But I try to motivate myself to go and give it my best shot. I would definitely recommend CrossFit to anyone, especially to people like me who never really had any experience of going to a gym." What a guy! |
